01. The Challenge: Empowering Agri-SMEs and Financial Institutions for Climate-Resilient Growth

Agri-SMEs are the backbone of Africa’s rural economies, yet face major hurdles: limited access to finance, fragmented markets, climate shocks, and a lack of tailored business support. Despite their potential, less than 2% of global climate finance reaches these enterprises, leaving thousands underfunded and underprepared.

Planterra Africa is a catalytic facility designed to bridge the gap between climate finance, financial institutions (FIs), and Agri-SMEs. It addresses critical barriers—limited access to finance, fragmented markets, climate shocks, and lack of tailored support—by mobilizing tailored finance, building resilience, and transforming the ecosystem. Serving as a connector between Agri-SMEs, FIs, accelerators, funders, and policymakers, Planterra unlocks growth and climate adaptation across Africa’s agricultural landscape.

02. Our Approach: De-risking, Capacity Building & Market Systems Change

Planterra Africa operates at the nexus of climate resilience, Agri-SME development, and inclusive finance. Through strategic partnerships with banks, development partners, local enterprise support organizations, and government agencies, we co-design solutions that mitigate financing risks and enhance Agri-SME capacity. Our integrated approach combines enterprise support, innovative financial product design, policy advocacy, and blended finance mechanisms to drive climate-smart growth across the agricultural landscape.

5. De-risking & Incentives for Lenders

We reduce lending risks and incentivize FIs through:

    • Credit Guarantee Scheme: Covers loan losses, tailored by value chain risk.
    • Agricultural Insurance Facility: Promotes bundling credit with insurance to manage climate and production risks.
    • Concessional Capital: Below-market-rate debt or equity to reduce capital costs for Agri-SMEs.
    • Performance-based Incentives: Rewards for scaling responsible agricultural lending (e.g., cashback, interest rebates).
    • Origination Incentives: Offsets high transaction costs of small loan sizes.
  • Impact Bonuses: Enhanced incentives for loans supporting gender inclusion, food security, or climate-smart agriculture.

6. Market Access Linkages & Commercial Partnerships

We strengthen Agri-SMEs’ market access through:

  • Brokering partnerships with processors, exporters, and B2B buyers.
  • Facilitating cross-border trade readiness, contract farming and offtake agreements.
